At A Glance

The Kichwa youth collective Piatúa Resiste works to protect the Piatúa River and preserve the cultural heritage of the Kichwa people of Santa Clara. The organisation arose in response to threats from colonisation, extractive industries, and a newly proposed mega dam.

The organisation’s key objectives include raising awareness about the importance of the Piatúa River, advocating for its protection, and mobilising resources to ensure its sustainability for future generations. They engage in community outreach, educational programmes, biodiversity surveying and monitoring, and legal advocacy to defend the river against industrial projects that could harm its ecosystem.

Their work highlights the interconnectedness of environmental health and cultural heritage, emphasising that protecting the Piatúa River is crucial for maintaining the Kichwa people’s way of life. By involving their communities and traditional authorities, and national and international partners, Piatúa Resiste aims to build a broad coalition of support to safeguard the river.

Supported by our Freshwater Programme, Piatúa Resiste strives to ensure the Piatúa River remains a vital and unspoiled resource for future generations, preserving its ecological integrity and cultural significance. Their dedication highlights the importance of both local and global action in safeguarding natural and cultural treasures.
